Stuff You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (⅛ teaspoon kept as-is)
  • 1 pound 85% lean ground beef
  • 1 cup tomato purée
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup

Sauté the Aromatics

Heat the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and a pinch of salt.

Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.

Stir in the Cajun seasoning and cayenne. Cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Cook the Meat

Add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until just pink, about 3 minutes.

Simmer the Sauce

Stir in the tomato purée, ketchup, and a few grinds of black pepper.

Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly beyond ketchup consistency, 8 to 10 minutes.

Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.

Serve

Spoon the meat mixture onto hamburger buns and serve warm.
